“It’s not the question of stone or glass, box or blob, metal or wood, straight or round, that drives us, but the constant search for an answer to the question how we humans will live in the future and how to implement it in design.” SEHW ARCHITEKTUR
It’s not the question of stone or glass, box or blob, metal or wood, straight or round, that drives us, but the constant search for an answer to the question how we humans will live in the future and how to implement it in design. SEHW was founded in 1996 and today is a registered trademark. Several internationally active enterprises of various legal forms exist under the umbrella of the trademark, currently with around 60 staff at several locations.
Hendrik Rieger and Prof. Xaver Egger act as managing directors of SEHW Architekur GmbH in Berlin. Besides its original architectural activities, SEHW is also active in the fields of general planning and project development. It focuses on public buildings, mostly as the result of prior architecture competitions, as well as offices, hotels, and retail buildings, etc. for private commercial builders, investors and developers.
In past years SEHW has won numerous prizes, awards and competitions. These include SEHW’s educational buildings, which were awarded the
BUILD AWARD Best Educational Facility Design – Germany in 2017. In 2018 the Shared Living project received the AIT AWARD in the special category: Residential models of the future.
Project
Gustav-Heinemann Comprehensive School, Essen, Germany
Learning 3.0 What does it look like? Informal learning areas, the building as a third instructor, links to the outside and interaction with the city – excerpts from the list of requirements of modern educational theory that we consider ourselves bound by when planning educational facilities.
What does that look like in practice? The building for the Gustav-Heinemann Comprehensive School in Essen as a building mass is resolved into differentiated building segments. Clearly defined outside areas of the school campus come about through strict arrangement. Offsetting the individual parts of the building achieves scaled placement in the urban environment.
Displacing the two southern parts of the building creates an easily recognisable entrance environment with an inviting forecourt that forms the prelude to the new school site and its new address. Facing east is a large schoolplaces yard in interaction with the existing gymnasium buildings. The shape of the building shields the neighbouring residential area from the noise of the outside recreational areas.
The BNB “Silver” certificate is a target objective. Construction began at the beginning of 2018 and will be completed by 2020. The project was awarded the “BUILD AWARD Best Educational Facility Design – Germany” and published in “LOGBuch No.1” of the IBA Heidelberg for its exemplary character.
