The Berlin practice zanderrotharchitekten was founded by Christian Roth and Sascha Zander in 1999, and has made a name for itself with innovative modular concepts
in the field of municipal housing. Their successful projects include striking individual buildings, but also large-scale urban planning projects.
The work of these Berlin architects is characterised by consistency in concept, organisation and form. Virtually all projects come into being in close cooperation with the practice’s own project development company SmartHoming, which as well as being involved in the conception also takes care of realisation and handover of the homes.
Project
li01 – Construction of Six Townhouses Liebigstrasse 1, Berlin, Germany
In the midst of 5,000 square metres of park-like landscape in the east of Berlin’s city centre, an ensemble comprising six freestanding townhouses was created.
Two six-storey buildings and four seven-storey buildings stand in relaxed interdependency, in which interior and exterior flow smoothly into one another. These residential buildings, comprising six to seven different types of flats and a ground level garden apartment, are organised in modular fashion: the open floorplans can be flexibly interconnected or divided.
Pairs of flats with 52 and 64 square metres of floorspace respectively can either be used individually or joined together to form a larger unit. The flats can therefore be adapted to changing circumstances and household sizes, changing to meet their users’ needs.
